This study has examined the impact of bank-specific indicators on the buffer capital of banks in India. The impact of key variables return on assets, credit deposit ratio, return on equity and the ratio of non-performing loans to total loans on buffer capital has been examined for banks in India. Using dynamic panel data regression, the results reveal that non-performing loans to total loans, return on assets and return on equity have a positive impact on buffer capital. It is revealed that the banks keep extra capital cushion with an increase in risk elements. Also, the credit deposit ratio is having a negative but significant impact on buffer capital. The results further reveal persistency in buffer capital across all models. The role of the cost of capital in the determination of buffer capital has also been examined. The results can be used by bank policymakers in the formulation of various reformation packages.

A Moderated Model for the Effect of Human Resource Management Strategy on Organizational Outcomes
Management and Labour Studies, Volume 48, Issue 4, Page 457-477, November 2023.
Much of the previous research has focused on the relationship between human resource practices and organizational outcomes. However, there is limited research investigating the effect of human resource strategy (accumulation, facilitation and utilization strategy) on organizational outcomes. This study addresses the research gap and aims to contribute to the stock of literature and theory by analysing the moderating effect of company age and company size on the relationship between human resource management strategy and organizational performance, competitive advantage and employee turnover in Pakistan’s hotel industry. Questionnaires were used to collect data from hotels located in Punjab province. Based on a final sample of 105 hotels, we found that the hotel age moderates the association between HRM strategy and employee turnover. The results reveal that the more the inclination towards an accumulation strategy, the better is organization’s performance and competitive advantage, and the lower the employee turnover. Other than contributing to the resource-based view and the contingency theory, this research provides suggestions to hotel managers regarding the effective use of HRM strategy. Specifically, by focusing on accumulation HR strategy, hotel managers could reduce employee turnover, generate competitive advantage and achieve high performance.

The Manufacturing Holonic Structured Virtual Team Organization: Labour Cost Reduction?
Management and Labour Studies, Ahead of Print.
It is an undeniable fact that business endeavours in modern times are centred on offshore operations. This scenario demands the employment of virtual teams to be seen as an essential requirement. The experiences from COVID-19 pandemic corroborate this reality. Corporations ought to revise their strategies to successfully incorporate technology as a part of their habitual actions. Holonic manufacturing emerges as a powerful communication and collaboration tool for virtual teams to optimize resources and human power. This study is based on an experiment consisting in a simulated automobile assembly industry. Holonic organizations are compared to non-holonic structures in terms of labour costs based on effective work times. The study employed a Holonic Manufacturing Structure to analyse its possible impact on labour cost reduction among several other advantages.

Emotional Labour During the COVID-19 Pandemic—Current Inquiry and Suggested Future Research Directions
Management and Labour Studies, Volume 48, Issue 4, Page 560-577, November 2023.
The objective of this article is to examine the impact of macro-extreme emotional experience (MEEE) and the new societal norms during the COVID-19 pandemic on health and well-being and their situational consequences on emotional labour of frontline employees. The vast literature on emotional labour in the past has focused on several situational cues, and individual and organizational factors as antecedents. We did a systematic review of available literature on emotional labour, literature on sentiment analysis and emotional experience during the pandemic and analysed COVID-19 related blogs using Natural Language Processing (NLP) in RStudio. At the same time, we attempted to look at the possible intervention of individual factors of MEEEs and social aspects of the new societal norms as antecedents on emotion regulation process and its outcome and propose a conceptual framework for future research on emotional labour under the ‘new normal’. It was concluded that perceived risk, fear and anxiety are extreme emotions that individuals are experiencing during the pandemic.

Price Discovery in Agricultural Commodities Markets for India: A Case of Cotton
Management and Labour Studies, Volume 48, Issue 4, Page 478-496, November 2023.
This study applies vector autoregression to capture the relationships among inflation, cotton spot and futures price. Further, the autoregressive distributed lag model has been applied to capture the impact of rainfall on the cotton spot and futures price. The result of this study reveals that cotton spot price positively impacts cotton futures, while rainfall negatively impacts the price of cotton futures. There is no impact of inflation on cotton spot and futures markets. Due to the sensitivity of crops to rainfall, the monsoon plays a vital role in price discovery in the agricultural market. Similarly, inflation is another significant issue linked to agricultural prices. Further, any movement in futures prices driven by the speculative activity of traders in the commodity derivatives does not contribute to changes in the spot prices.

Over-the-Top (OTT) Streaming Services: Studying Users’ Behaviour Through the UTAUT Model
Management and Labour Studies, Volume 48, Issue 4, Page 531-547, November 2023.
Over-the-Top (OTT) streaming platforms are transforming the industry’s broadcasting market and structure. The streaming media revolution is based on constant innovation, both in terms of experiences and products. Streaming media is emerging strongly with various choices, time shifts, place shifts and navigation. The article describes the adoption of OTT using the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model, which explains the impact of emerging technology on the audience. The study, which employed structural equation modelling, analysed the data of 458 respondents, using the partial least-square structural equation model software. The findings showed that the model reasonably explained the respondents’ acceptance of OTT. More specifically, the attitude towards technology is determined by performance expectancy and effort expectancy while the attitude towards technology, facilitating conditions and social influence positively affect the intention to adopt OTT. The implications of the study discuss the methods to increase acceptance and adoption of OTT.

Industrial Relations and the Tragic Flaw
Management and Labour Studies, Ahead of Print.
Anyone familiar with Shakespeare and his tragedies would have heard about the ‘tragic flaw’ of his heroes. All his tragic heroes—Macbeth, King Lear, Hamlet and Othello—catapulted towards their tragic end because of a tragic flaw: Vaulting ambition in Macbeth, misplaced trust in King Lear, indecisiveness in Hamlet, green eyed jealousy in Othello and so on. This article is an attempt to respond to the question of whether industrial relations practice is also characterized by a tragic flaw which significantly undermines its potency. The data for the article come from the published newspaper reports related to industrial relations incidents some of which involved avoidable workplace violence and tragic fatalities. The article analyses these industrial relations incidents and draws insights related to the root causes of what has been termed as the ‘morphology of volatility’.
